Description

Regimental organisation

Hanoverian dragoon regiments all had the same organization. Each regiment counted 712 men consisted of:

  • staff
    • 1 adjutant
    • 1 regimental quartermaster
    • 1 chaplain
    • 1 regimental surgeon
    • 4 assistant-surgeons
    • 1 kettle-drummer
    • 5 oboists
    • 1 provost
    • 1 servant
  • 4 squadrons each consisting of:
    • 2 companies, each consisting of
      • 3 officers
      • 7 NCOs
      • 2 drummers
      • 75 troopers

Each company contributed 6 men to form the grenadier company which then consisted of:

  • 1 lieutenant
  • 2 NCOs
  • 2 drummers
  • 48 horse grenadiers

Drill

At the beginning of the Seven Years' War, dragoon regiments usually formed in 3 ranks with their largest and darkest horses in the front rank. On parade each rank was 8 paces distant from the other; and each file 4 paces. A space of 25 paces was also maintained between squadrons. The grenadier company deployed on the right flank at 16 paces from the closest squadron.

Column of march was 4 horses wide.

In 1758, Ferdinand of Brunswick ordered the Hanoverian dragoons to now form in 2 ranks.
