Description

Regimental organisation

Hanoverian line cavalry regiments all had the same organization with a theoretical total regimental strength of 358 men. Each regiment consisted of:

  • staff
    • 1 adjutant
    • 1 regimental quartermaster
    • 1 chaplain
    • 1 regimental surgeon
    • 2 assistant-surgeons
    • 1 trumpeters
    • 1 kettle-drummer
    • 1 provost
    • 1 servant
  • 2 squadrons each consisting of:
    • 3 companies, each consisting of
      • 3 officers
      • 4 NCOs
      • 1 trumpeter
      • 50 troopers

Exceptionally, the Leibgarde (or Garde du Corps) had only one squadron. The squadron was made up of three companies which would have brought the regimental strength to 191 men.

The Grenadiere zu Pferd (Horse Grenadiers) also had a single squadron of two companies with a strength of 183 men but this was split into two companies.

Drill

At the beginning of the Seven Years' War, cavalry regiments usually formed in 3 ranks with their largest and darkest horses in the front rank. On parade each rank was 8 paces distant from the other; and each file 4 paces. A space of 25 paces was also maintained between squadrons.

Column of march was 4 horses wide.

In 1758, Ferdinand of Brunswick ordered the Hanoverian cavalry to now form in 2 ranks.
