Introduction

At the beginning of the Seven Years War, the Prussian dragoons consisted of 70 squadrons in 12 regiments.

Composition and Organisation

In 1756, after the doubling of the supernumeraries (from 12 to 24 per squadron), each regiment consisted of 5 squadrons, to the exception of the Bayreuth Dragoons (Nr 5) and Schorlemmer Dragoons (Nr 6) who had 10 squadrons. A 5 squadrons regiment consisted of:

  • staff
  • junior staff
  • 5 squadrons of 178 men:
    • 6 officers
    • 12 NCOs
    • 3 drummers
    • 156 troopers
    • 1 farrier

On February 1 1757, each squadron was increased by 1 officer, 2 NCOs and 12 troopers. For the regiments stationed in Saxony, these reinforcements were supplied through local recruitment. Thus, a 5 squadrons regiment consisted of:

  • staff
  • junior staff
  • 5 squadrons of 193 men:
    • 7 officers
    • 14 NCOs
    • 3 drummers
    • 168 troopers
    • 1 farrier
