Origin and History

The regiment was created on 16 June 1685 and took the name of Beaujolais. The regiment was given to the Jean-Thomas, Marquis de Bérulle.

In 1690, during the Nine Years' War (1688-97), the regiment joined the Army of the Alps. In 1691, it took part in the conquest of Savoie and of Nice; in 1693, in the Battle of Marsaglia. In 1696, the regiment was transferred to the Rhine.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by:

  • from 17 June 1685: Jean-Thomas, Marquis de Bérulle
  • from 23 December 1702: N. Le Ménestrel de Hauguel de Lutteaux (killed in front of Vercelli)
  • from 20 July 1704 to 20 July 1734: Étienne Le Ménestrel de Hauguel de Lutteaux

On 10 February 1749, the regiment was disbanded. Its grenadiers were incorporated in the Grenadiers the France and its other companies in Traisnel Infanterie.

Service during the War

In 1701, the regiment was initially allocated to the Army of Germany, but was soon sent to Italy.

On 1 February 1702, the regiment took part in the defence of Cremona against a surprise attack of the Imperialists. It later took part in the capture of Luzzara and Borgoforte.

In 1703, the regiment took part in the expedition in South Tyrol.

In 1704, the regiment took part in the sieges of Vercelli, Ivrea and Verrua. It colonel was killed in front of Vercelli.

On 16 August 1705, the regiment fought in the Battle of Cassano.

On 8 September 1706, the regiment fought in the Battle of Castiglione.

From 1707 to 1711, the regiment served in Dauphiné.

In 1712, the regiment was transferred to the Army of the Rhine.

In 1713, the regiment took part in the siege and recapture of Landau and in the capture of Freiburg.
