The regiment was raised on 15 September 1702 by James FitzJames, Duke of Berwick with deserters from the British Army.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by:

The regiment was disbanded in 1713 and its soldiers incorporated in the Irish regiment in the French service.

In 1703, the regiment served with the Army of Flanders.
