Origin and History

This Walloon regiment was created on 24 October 1688 by Frédéric Léonor, Comte de Poitiers.

From 1688 to 1692, during the Nine Years' War (1688-97), the regiment served on the coasts of Normandie. In 1693, it was sent to Italy where it fought in the Battle of Marsaglia. In 1694, it took part in the defence of Provence. In 1695, it was transferred to the Army of Catalonia and took part in the relief of Palamos. In 1696 and 1697, it served in the Army of the Rhine.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by:

  • from 25 July 1700: Albert-François, Chevalier de Croï-Solre
  • from 31 August 1709: Jean-Charles de Mesgrigny, Comte d’Aunay

The regiment was disbanded on 15 November 1714 and incorporated in Maine Infanterie.

Service during the War

In 1701, the regiment was allocated to the Army of Italy. On 1 September, it was at the Battle of Chiari where it deployed in the second line in d’Orgemont’s Brigade.

On 15 August 1702, the regiment took part in the Battle of Luzzara. It then took part in the capture of Luzzara and Borgoforte.

In 1703, the regiment took part in the expedition in South Tyrol.

In 1704, the regiment took part in the sieges of Vercelli, Ivrea and Verrua.

In 1705, the regiment took part in the siege of Chivasso. On 16 August, it fought in the Battle of Cassano.

In 1706, the regiment took part in the unsuccessful siege of Turin and in the disastrous Battle of Turin..

In 1707, the regiment took part in the defence of Toulon.

In 1708, the regiment was allocated to the Army of Dauphiné.

In 1709, the regiment was transferred to Flanders. On 11 September, it fought in the Battle of Malplaquet.

In 1710, the regiment took part in the defence of the Lines of the Lauter.

In 1711, the regiment was sent back to Flanders and took part in the attack on Arleux.

In 1712, the regiment was at the siege and recapture of Douai and in the sieges of Le Quesnoy and Bouchain.

In 1713, the regiment took part in the sieges of Landau and Freiburg.
