Origin and History

In 1672 three cavalry companies existed under Major von Hornumb. In 1673 they were increased to four and in 1676 to five companies. In 1683 the regiment was created from four of these companies and four new companies.

From 1685 to 1702, the number of companies of the regiment fluctuated between four and six.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regimental Chef was:

  • from 1685 to 1714: General Hermann Wilhelm von Spiegel zu Desenberg (retired from active service in 1711)

In 1813 the regiment was incorporated in the regiment Gens d'armes (K2) and ceased to exist.

By 7 July 1702, the regiment was attached to the Allied army encamped at Nijmegen, where it was deployed in Saint-Laurent's Brigade in the second line of the Right Wing Cavalry.

On 15 November 1703, the regiment fought in the Combat of Speyerbach, where it was deployed in the first line of the right wing. In December, the it was stationed in Bonn and the Lines of Posterings.

By mid-February 1704, the regiment formed part of the army of the Prince of Hessen which was posted on the Rhine. On 2 July, it was present at the Battle of Schellenberg, where it formed part of the Reserve in Erbach's Brigade. On 13 August, the regiment took part in the decisive Battle of Blenheim, where it was deployed in Hesse-Homberg's Brigade in the third line of the Centre.

In August 1706, the regiment formed part of the Hessian Contingent, which joined the Imperialist army in Northern Italy. On 8 September, the regiment took part in the Battle of Castiglione.

In 1708, the regiment was organised in two squadrons. On 11 July, it took part in the Battle of Oudenarde.
