Origin and History

The regiment was created on 4 October 1692 and given to Jean-Louis de Cugnac, Chevalier du Bourdet. It took the name of the region of Laonnais.

In 1693, during the Nine Years’ War (1688-97), the regiment served on the coasts. In 1694, it was allocated to the Army of Germany; and in 1695, to the Army of Flanders. In 1695, it was present at the bombardment of Bruxelles and was then transferred to the Army of the Meuse. In 1697, it once more campaigned in Flanders.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by

  • from 4 October 1692: Jean-Louis de Cugnac, Chevalier du Bourdet
  • from 14 March 1710 to 20 September 1714: Ferdinand Agathange, Marquis de Brun

The regiment was disbanded on 20 September 1714.

Service during the War

In 1701, the regiment occupied Luxembourg.

On 14 October 1702, the two battalions of the regiment were present at the Battle of Friedlingen.

In February 1703, the regiment took part in the Siege of Kehl. At the end of April, it followed Villars in his march to Bavaria.

On 13 August 1704, the regiment fought in the disastrous Battle of Blenheim.

In 1705, the regiment was allocated to the Army of the Rhine.

In 1706, the regiment was transferred to Spain and took part in the siege of Barcelona.

On 25 April 1707, the regiment fought in the Battle of Almansa and took part in the siege of Lérida.

In 1708, the regiment was at the siege of Tortosa.

In 1709, the regiment was transferred to Flanders and placed in garrison in Bouchain.

In 1711, the regiment took part in the defence of Bouchain where it was taken as prisoners of war.

In 1712, the regiment was exchanged.
