Origin and History

This Walloon regiment was created on 24 October 1688 by Louis-François, Duc de Boufflers.

In 1688, at the outbreak of the Nine Years' War (1688-97), the regiment took part in the conquest of Palatinate. In 1690, it participated in the Battle of Fleurus; in 1691, in the siege of Mons; in 1692, and in the siege of Namur. In 1693, it was transferred to the Army of the Moselle, and in 1695, to the Army of the Alps. In 1696, it was at the siege of Valenza. In 1697, it was allocated to the Army of the Meuse.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by:

  • from 1 October 1694: Jean-Baptiste Hue, Marquis de Miromesnil
  • from 16 September 1710: Miromesnil (brother of the former colonel)

The regiment was disbanded on 15 November 1714.

Service during the War

In 1701, the regiment was allocated to the Army of Italy. On 1 September, it was at the Battle of Chiari where it was kept in reserve behind the headquarters.

On 15 August 1702, the regiment took part in the capture of Luzzara and Borgoforte.

In 1703, the regiment took part in the Combat of Stradella, and in the Combat of Castelnuovo de Bormia, and in the action of San Benedetto when the Savoyard Army was forced to deposit arms.

In 1704, the regiment took part in the sieges of Vercelli, Ivrea and Verrua.

On 16 August 1705, the regiment fought in the Battle of Cassano.

In 1706, the regiment was transferred to the Army of Andalusia.

In 1707, the regiment took part in the capture of Lérida and in the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo.

In 1708, the regiment took part in the siege of Tortosa.

In 1710, the regiment campaigned in Flanders where it took part in the defence of Béthune.

In 1712, the regiment was allocated to the Army of Dauphiné.
