Origin and History
This Walloon regiment was created on 24 October 1688 by Philippe-Emmanuel-Ferdinand-François de Croï, Comte de Solre.
In 1689 and 1690, during the Nine Years' War (1688-97), the regiment served in the Army of the Moselle. In 1691, it was transferred to Flanders and took part in the siege of Mons. In 1692, it participated in the capture of Namur and in the Battle of Steenkerque; and in 1693, in the Battle of Landen and in the siege of Charleroi. In 1694, it was transferred to the Army of the Rhine, in 1695, to the Army of Catalonia. In 1696, it took part in the relief of Palamos; and in 1697, in the siege of Barcelona.
During the War of the Spanish Succession, the regiment was commanded by:
- from 22 January 1696: Philippe-Alexandre-Emmanuel de Croï, Comte de Solre (son of the former colonel)
- from 20 March 1709: Chevalier de Croï-Solre (brother of the former colonel)
- from 12 July 1709 to 24 May 1721: Albert-François de Croï, Comte de Beaufort
The regiment was disbanded on 10 February 1749. Its grenadiers were incorporated in the Grenadiers de France and the rest of the unit in Cambis Infanterie.
Service during the War
In 1701, the regiment was initially allocated to the Army of Germany but was soon transferred to Italy where it took part in the Battle of Chiari where it deployed in the second line in d’Orgemont’s Brigade.
On 15 August 1702, the regiment took part in the Battle of Luzzara.
In 1703, the regiment took part in the expedition in South Tyrol and in the capture of Asti.
In 1704, the regiment took part in the sieges of Vercelli, Ivrea and Verrua.
On 16 August 1705, the regiment fought in the Battle of Cassano.
On 19 April 1706, the regiment fought in the Battle of Calcinato and in the unsuccessful siege of Turin.
In 1707, the regiment was allocated to the Army of Flanders.
On 11 July 1708, the regiment fought in the Battle of Oudenarde.
On 11 September 1709, the regiment fought in the Battle of Malplaquet where his colonel was killed.
In 1711, the regiment took part in the attack on Arleux.
In 1712, the regiment was at the siege and recapture of Douai and in the sieges of Le Quesnoy and Bouchain.
In 1713, the regiment took part in the sieges of Landau and Freiburg.
