Origin and History

The regiment was raised in 1702 by Lieutenant-Colonel C. F. E. von Wartensleben. It initially comprised ten companies (each of 87 men) organised in two battalions.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, the successive Chefs of the regiment were:

  • from 1702: Lieutenant-Colonel C. F. E. von Wartensleben
  • from 1709 to 1755: Prince George von Hessen (promoted to lieutenant-general in 1734)

From 1709, when the regiment was given to a prince, the effective commander of the regiment was:

  • from 1709 to 1717: Lieutenant-Colonel G. E. von Wutginau

In 1789 the regiment was amalgamated with Infanterie Regiment No. 8. In 1806, it was disbanded.

Service during the War

By December 1702, one battalion of the regiment was part of the Allied army quartered in the Low Countries.

On 15 November 1703, 1 battalion of the regiment probably fought in the Combat of Speyerbach (another Hessian regiment had the same name in 1703).

On 2 July 1704, one battalion of the regiment was present at the Battle of Schellenberg, where it was allocated to St. Paul’s Brigade. On 13 August, one battalion took part in the Battle of Blenheim, where it was deployed in the second line of the extreme left wing, in Wilkens’s Brigade.

In 1707, one battalion of the regiment took part in the unsuccessful siege of Toulon.
