Units of measurement used
In our articles dedicated to the vessels in service at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession, unless specifically mentioned, units of measurement are presented in metric and/or Imperial units.

Throughout the XVIIIth century, technologies related to naval warfare evolved very rapidly in Europe, faster indeed than land warfare technologies. Thanks to their navies, European powers held the world in their networks of colonies and trading posts.

The following navies were involved in the War of the Spanish Succession:

Aligned with France Aligned with the Empire

Dutch Republic

Great Britain (31 articles)

N.B.: Some of the belligerents had no navy. To our knowledge, this was the case for Austria, Hanover, Prussia and Savoy.
